The Lungs

The Lungs are usally considered a part of the respiratory system, but they are also essential for the excretory system to function. The lungs help to maintain homeostasis by regulating levels of carbon dioxide. When a person exhales, the lungs release carbon dioxide into the air and out of the body.

Your lungs take in oxygen and release excess carbon dioxide from your blood as you breathe. When you exhale, the excess carbon dioxide inside the bloodstream leaves from the lungs by diffusion. The concentration of carbon dioxide is higher inside the bloodstream than outside, so the gas moves out of the capillaries and through the air sacs, and out of the body as a person exhales.
